movie discussion day 3

Dear cohort,
I did not create a shareable video, but during our small group discussion I learned how to use Photo booth and Quicktime to produce low "tech overhead" screen movies (with and without audio), no/low edit videos and and photos and movies with movie and image backgrounds. Easy ways for students to produce low/mid level video with little to no editing, drafting skills that are scalable to higher level movies.

We also had a conversation that makes it very likely I will be looking to purchase an iRig microphone - it really seems to improve the audio quality. I think the ability to jack in and listen to the audio input to make real time microphone adjustments to improve sound quality.

Animoto

After a discussion with another educator in our cohort, I learned about a great tool for creating videos, Animoto (www.animoto.com). This is an easy way for students to add their images, text, and videos into one video with only a few purposeful choices, clicks and drags, even though their final products will look like it took hours to complete with all of the flash. Animoto is a free website that allows students to create a 30 second video in a style of their choice and it even has music options for background filler as well. This program has upgrade capabilities for a small fee, but after talking further with my colleague she mentioned that all of the bells and whistle actually distracted the students away from the purpose and conciseness needed for their video projects and presentations. Sharing Animoto videos with websites and blogs is very easy using with only a single line of code. This would be great for digital portfolios or classroom websites. I look forward to exploring more of this on my own, and I hope you can too! Melissa

talk with media cohort friday assignment

Hi Everyone,

I am Evan Cooper and my school page is here: http://sasgrade6reddragon.wikispaces.com/Language+Arts+-+E.+Cooper
but my wiki from my last couple years teaching math is here:
http://sasgrade6reddragon.wikispaces.com/Language+Arts+-+E.+Cooper
I have been teaching overseas for 10 years now, 3 in Tunisia and 7 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I now teach at Shanghai American School at the Puxi campus. I have a passion for teaching middle years students. I believe firmly that children are our most valuable and lovable resource. To prepare them for the future we must fuel their love of life and learning and provide them with the tools to follow wherever their lives lead them.

I travel the world with my wife and best friend, Suzanne Cooper, a kindergarten teacher and my two beautiful children, Holden, 8 years old and my biggest fan, and Charlotte, 3 years old, a girl with a mind of her own...
I love to read science fiction, cooking, teaching and I am very excited to come back to an old passion of mine, making pottery with my students during the second quarter of this school year.

Cheers,
Evan
